Emergency Response Teams that deal with chemical releases rely on Hazardous Materials (HazMat) Technicians do get the job done. However, the regulatory requirements and applicable consensus standards that describe the role of HazMat Technicians vary. Federal OHSA, NFPA, and various state agencies have unique definitions of a HazMat Technician’s role and response capabilities. This paper will compare the different job descriptions, initial and refresher training requirements and response capabilities for HazMat Technicians.
