He served 33 years as a first responder, making high-stakes decisions while managing thousands of high-risk, highly stressful emergencies and crises. Based, in part, on his experience as a firefighter-paramedic, fire chief and emergency commander, he shares best practices for conducting rapid situational assessments and he helps workers develop skills essential to making accurate high-stakes decisions under extremely stressful conditions. To enhance his decades of practical, in the trenches, decision making experience, he completed a Doctor of Philosophy degree while researching how individuals and teams develop, maintain and use situational awareness to improve high-risk decisions.
Dr. Gasaway has authored 6 books and his contributions on situational awareness and decision making have been featured and referenced in more than 400 books, book chapters, journal articles and online publications. His government consulting and training clients include NASA, the US Department of Homeland Security, the US Department of Defense and every branch of the US armed forces including the United States Military Academy and the United States Air Force Academy.
