Battery Safety and UL Standards for Lithium Based Technology

Abstract:
Lithium Cells and Batteries have become an essential element in our life nowadays. It has been the primary source of power for mobile and portable devices. As we move forward, cars and even trucks are being powered by Lithium Ion Batteries. However, there is a safety element that we all need to be aware of. UL LLC can provide certification to cells and battery packs based on end product application. In this presentation, we will introduce the different UL Lithium Ion Safety Standards and why certification is important.

Kevin Tang PE, Staff Engineer, CTECH Division- Kevin has been with UL for 29 years and have served as Project Handler, Reviewer, Technical Advisor, Primary Designated Engineer for several categories and Trainer. He has worked on certification of Batteries, Cells, ITE, Audio/Video Equipment, Modular Data Centers, Medical Equipment and Telecom. He worked on development of training courses for small and medium format batteries and IEC/UL 62368-1 Annex M (Equipment using batteries). His current role is ITE Project Handler and Reviewer and Instructor for IEC/UL 62368-1 seminars. He is the West Coast Battery Expert.
