Today’s technologies allow combining online and face to face education for the best learning opportunity. Current research indicates students retain 75% of the information presented when they are engaged and learning by doing. Web-based educational modules allow students to learn at their own pace while interacting with peers, encouraging them to collaborate and share lessons learned. The increase of technology access facilitates the transformation of education and training to accommodate the global marketplace that exists today. Project Based Learning (PBL) is an educational methodology that supports learning by doing bringing work-based scenarios into a classroom setting. PBL takes students from being passive listeners to actively engaged learners. PBL provides students a safe environment to experiment, to create and sometimes to fail, while allowing students the opportunity to think, discover, and most importantly, learn. Interactions between students allow for collaboration and sharing of lessons learned as well as peer teaching. Additionally face to face learning environments enable review and clarification of topic information as well as practical, real-life application of project scenarios common to facility and/or project managers. Combining online collaborative learning with face to face PBL provides the ideal learning environment for students around the world to connect to industry experts and gain a top level, technical education while remaining engaged in their current assignments wherever that may be.
