Now that you have seen and heard about Environmental Management Systems (EMS) and ISO 14001, what about safety? Similar to an EMS, a Safety Management System (SMS) has many benefits. In addition to addressing applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) required programs, a SMS provides a standard approach to document and implement hazard assessments, and hazard prevention and control across multiple facilities. It also provides methods for addressing programmatic issues and allows for effective communication. The SMS can and should be used as a tool to assess and control the hazards associated with an organization’s activities. This paper presents several case studies of step by step approaches used by the author to develop and implement an effective SMS at various client sites. Variations in scope, methods employed, pitfalls encountered, and lessons learned will be presented.
