Nanotechnology, originally defined only in terms of a size range, has evolved into an umbrella term covering the engineering of small structures or particles to exploit unique properties appearing in the 1-100 nanometer size range. The rapid development of products using engineered nanomaterials has raised concerns about nanotechnology safety in occupational, consumer and environmental settings. Dr. Lichty, Occupational Medical Director at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, will provide an update on what is known about nanotechnology health and safety issues. Topics will include exposure measurement, respiratory protection, good nano-lab practices, novel routes of exposure, and results of nanotoxicology studies.
