After almost a decade in the making, the new ANSI/AIHA Z10 (2005) standard for
Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems presents corporations and other
organizations with a best practice model for effective workplace safety management.
Consistent with the Plan-Do-Check-Act aspects of pre-existing ISO models for Quality and
Environmental, the Z10 model takes safety well beyond traditional professional safety staff
activities and involves senior and other operations managers as safety leaders and gains
the participation of all employees. If implemented thoughtfully with an eye toward having an
effective process and not just certification, such a management system will allow
organizations to continuously improve safety by continuously reducing risk.
