Since the dawn of the modern environmental era in the late 1960’s, industry has been subjected to increasing regulation, but also an increasing environmental ethic. Maintaining compliance, once the sole goal and difficult enough with more aspects of a fab’s operation falling under regulations, has moved to include proactive assessment of local and global community concerns. Determining how well a fab is meeting its requirement and responsibilities in this complex matrix requires the use of various types of audits. While all ultimately evaluate an aspect of a facility’s environmental capabilities, they do so from different perspectives. This presentation will review four types of audits: regulatory compliance; pollution prevention; resource management; and management systems. After defining each of them, they will individually be examined and compared with respect to their basic purpose, audit approach and methodology, requirements, and final results.
