Understanding Safety Culture

Axelrod, Marc
(Boeing Company, Beverly Hills, CA)

A culture is a set of solutions produced by a group of people to meet specific problems posed by the situations that they face in common. How can we understand and influence the safety culture in our own organizations so that the safest solutions become institutionalized? We will examine the literature in the field, review both \\\\\\\”Normal Accident Theory\\\\\\\” and \\\\\\\”High Reliable Organization\\\” theory, Safety Sociology and systems thinking. The goal will be to use this knowledge to increase our effectiveness and value as safety professionals managing risky technology.
