Andrey Massarsky

Dr. Massarsky is a Senior Health Scientist with Cardno ChemRisk (Aliso Viejo, CA) with over 10 years of experience in the field of toxicology. Dr. Massarsky primary practice areas include the safety, toxicology, and potential risks of certain chemicals to humans [e.g., chemicals on Proposition 65 list, chemicals associated with electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and microplastics], as well as ecological risk assessment (e.g., glyphosate and PFAS).

Dr. Massarsky earned his BS in Biomedical Science with minor in Criminology in 2008 and completed his PhD in Biology with specialization in Chemical and Environmental Toxicology in 2014 from the University of Ottawa. Dr. Massarsky is proficient in toxicological study design using various models. His dissertation focused on investigating the toxicity of silver nanoparticles in fish using in vivo and in vitro model systems. His nanotoxicology experience spans multiple projects with mammalian, aquatic vertebrate, and non-vertebrate model systems to evaluate the toxicity of various nanoparticles, including silver, zinc oxide, and quantum dots, through university and governmental agency collaboration. From 2014 until 2018, he pursued a postdoctoral position at Duke University. As a postdoctoral associate, he investigated the applicability of the zebrafish embryo model to study the toxicity of cigarette smoke on early development with the aim to supplement research on the effects of maternal smoking using mammalian models systems. Dr. Massarsky has also researched the toxicity of propylene glycol (e-cigarette humectant), plastic nanoparticles, benzo[a]pyrene, selenium, as well as complex mixtures, including sediment extract from a Superfund site that was located on Elizabeth River at Portsmouth, Virginia. Dr. Massarsky has published 27 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals on various aspects of ecotoxicology, neurotoxicology, and environmental toxicology. He also reviewed over 65 manuscripts for 30 different journals, including Nanotoxicology, Aquatic Toxicology, Ecotoxicology, Environmental Health Perspectives, Science of the Total Environment, Environmental Science & Technology.
