Brian Sherin – SESHA Fellow

Brian Sherin has been a member of SESHA and active in semiconductor and high technology industry ES&H; since 1984. He served on the SESHA Board of Directors from 2003 to 2009 as the Association’s Treasurer. He started his ESH career with a small chemical manufacturer, and then General Instruments Optoelectronics. Brian then joined Hewlett Packard’s Components Group, where, with colleague and SESHA Fellow Andy McIntyre, did significant early work on gallium arsenide safety. In 1990, he and Andy formed Environmental & Occupational Risk Management (EORM) to become the premier technical ES&H; firm in the industry, and the training ground for hundreds of ESH professionals.

Some of his specific industry accomplishments included being part of the the SEMI S2 semiconductor equipment product safety committee, developing and implementing semiconductor equipment installation safety processes that were used extensively in the industry throughout the 90s, and researching the effects of earthquakes on semiconductor facilities and equipment. In 2001, Brian spun off ESHconnect from EORM, which became one of the first producers of elearning and product sustainability information applications for high technology industries. In 2006, Brian joined the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, a Department of Energy National Laboratory at Stanford University, where he is the Deputy Director of ES&H.;

In his “spare” time, he has been a volunteer firefighter in Santa Cruz County for 17 years, and is a Safety Officer with the US National Disaster Medical System’s California Task Force 6, with which he served as the Safety Officer for the US Department of Health & Human Services for US medical operations in Haiti immediately after the devastating earthquake. Brian is married and has two wonderful sons, Noah 12 and Nathaniel 10.
