John Cox

John Cox began his relationship with the Semiconductor Safety Association (SSA) in the Fall of 1979 about three months after coming to work in the semiconductor industry for Digital Equipment Corporation in June 1979. In his first contacts with Ted Bielli from Motorola, Lee Neal from Fairchild Semiconductor, Ed Sawicki from Intel Corporation, Bill Turney from Texas Instruments, Bob Wittkower from Mostek and Chuck McHenry from Xerox Corporation, John learned first hand just how powerful, rich and helpful a network of professional Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) resources the SSA had begun to build from its very earliest days. Over the past three decades John has developed close friendships and strong working relationships with hundreds of EH&S professionals from around the globe.

John Cox has over 30 years experience in the environment health and safety field. He has more than 25 years of experience managing industrial environmental health and safety programs. He is experienced in the development of EH&S management systems and has considerable success in implementing proactive, prevention-based programs, accomplishing significant reductions in operating costs. Mr. Cox has been an EH&S Manager for Digital Equipment Corporation (1979 – 1983), EH&S Director for Shipley Company (1983 – 1995) and Vice President of Worldwide Environmental Health and Safety Affairs for Siliconix, Inc. (1997 – 2000). Before founding Advanced Technology Solutions, LLC (2000 – Present), John served as Executive Vice President for EnviroBusiness, Inc. (1995 – 2000) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. John Cox is a Professional Engineer in both Chemical and Environmental Engineering and an accomplished C.I.H. He has completed consulting assignments for a wide range of chemical process industry and specialty chemicals clients, academic institutions, biotechnology, microelectronics and pharmaceutical facilities in the areas of facility safety code reviews, product safety reviews, training programs, hazardous materials management, indoor air quality evaluations and multimedia EH&S audits. At Advanced Technology Solutions, John specializes in the development of value-added EH&S management systems, industrial hygiene studies, prevention-based indoor air quality programs, health and safety training programs and product/process/equipment safety reviews.

John helped form a New England Region SSA group in 1983, was first elected to the SSA National Board of Directors in 1984 and was elected a Fellow in 1997. John has given presentations on a broad spectrum of environmental engineering, safety engineering and industrial hygiene topics at regional, national and international SSA conferences for the past 25 years. John has served on the SSA (now Semiconductor Environmental Safety and Health Association [SESHA]) Board of Directors from 1984 to 1996 and 2000 to present. John has served as SESHA Secretary from 2002 to 2003, Vice President from 1990 to 1991, President-Elect from 2003 to 2004 and President of the organization from 1991 to 1994 and 2004 to 2005. John Cox is very grateful for all of the opportunities that he has had to be of service to SSA/SESHA membership over the past three decades. Two of the leadership moves that John feels proudest of contributing to in his time on the SSA Board of Directors were: 1.) opening up the election process for SSA BOD members; and 2.) hiring Burk and Associates, Inc. (BAI) to serve as the association management organization to manage the SSA/SESHA executive offices.

John has a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering and a Master of Science in Environmental Health Engineering, both from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. Prior to going to work in industry in 1975, John has 4 years of teaching experience at the high school and university level.

John and his wife Denyse live in Harvard, Massachusetts with their daughters Erin and Megan.
